Truscott's first class career last for just five years and in that he managed to play one Test for New Zealand. Starting his career with Canterbury, Truscott didn't have much success. He then played for New Zealand U-23 and scored 165 against Auckland. That remained his only ton in domestic cricket.

When he was called for the third Test against Pakistan in 1965, there were a few questions asked. In the only match that he played, he scored 3 and 26. The selectors overlooked him for the upcoming tours of India and Pakistan. Truscott shifted to Wellington and played for them, but after a poor season, he called it quits.
